MICK JAGGER: A LIFE IN CLOTHES

by Gillian McCain

Early preppy. Shirt bought at Mark’s and Spencer. “Mick, it’s too small!” “Mom, it’s the look I’m going for! I can’t articulate it yet, but trust me, fifty years from now people on something called the world wide web will be deconstructing it!” Today would they call it “norm core”?

Yes, today they would call it “norm core.”

British Colonial Raja Edwardian? Fabric bought in Morocco from a man-boy child street textile vendor… But what kind of young man goes to Morocco and buys fabric? Mick. And thats why we love him.

The no-make-up make-up look?

THIS IS FUCKING CHIC! Kind of 70s Yves St Laurent ten years before Yves designed it. And that smug smile. THIS IS ONE CHIC, SMUG MOTHERFUCKER!

Mick from Rock and Roll Circus, 1968. Inspired by Bobby Beausoleil?

I love this look! These boots are fantastic, The belt is fantastic but its the long sleeved snug tee shirt that was revolutionary. I tried to imitate this in the early 90s. I bought some burnt orange cords from Urban Outfitters, and a burgundy long sleeved tee. But i definitely didn’t pull it off.  In my opinion, the long sleeve tee shirt only really looks good on a man, unless you are a flat chested woman. Which should be appreciated more; they were in the 70s! Am I the only 34-B woman who wishes she was smaller? There must be more out there. Or am i a freak of nature? A freak of nature who wishes she looked  like Mick Jagger from Rock and Roll Circus?

The infamous free concert in Hyde Park. I don’t quite understand it, but that doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate… whatever signifier he was striving for… I don’t know… but I have faith in him that conceptually he knew what he was doing…

Hey, it was the 70s. And he owned it. Velvet or velour?

Was he one of the first who wore the meaningless tee shirt and made it cool? You tell me.

Few men could pull this color off– cheap lime sherbet with artificial coloring. Mick can. And did.

Mick and Bianca Jagger out on the town, 1982

Is that an Izod? With a Brooks Brothers blazer, possibly from the boys department? Bianca looks all piss and vinegar, which is fine, but Mick looks classic. Unkept which took an hour in front of the mirror. That was one of my parameters for a husband: I will not spend my life with a man who spends more time in front of the mirror than me. Mick could have been the exception. Perhaps.

Rocking the rugby shirt. And those jeans! Casual jacket. Corduroy? Looks like he like he just rolled out of bed… well, not really. Who is the girl? What girl?

Mick_Jagger_2177863a

Yikes! I’m speechless. Classic yet daring.  Looks like an aristocrat that doesn’t give a fuck. Which is Mick. Right? Am I wrong?

Gorgeous. Rock star 70s leisure wear. Or may be early 80s. Could be in Montauk, Mustique, or Malibu. That shirt looks so soft! Kind of a male Annie Hall look. Which is an interesting concept: A man dressing like a woman dressing like a man. There’s probably dissertations being written on this concept in small liberal arts colleges all over the U.S. as we speak.

THIS photo is hard for me to post (that’s why I’m keeping it small) but I’ve got to throw in a few negative comments here and there so I won’t look like a paid hack or a time warp groupie. Okay, even Mick can be too thin. The eye makeup disturbs me; he’s worn it before and it’s been perfectly acceptable but here it is… creepy, and not in a good way. Is this the “Shattered” Mick? Is this idea of “New York”? Though the white capezios— love love love. Did he buy them at the Macdougal street store and drop by Reminiscence afterward to purchase a one-piece long underwear jumper in a jewel toned color? Bet he did. But only wore it to bed. Mick knows what to do and what not to do.

I CANNOT STAND BY THIS. I AM SORRY THIS IS JUST TOO DISTURBING IN TOO MANY WAYS. HOUNDS SAYS HE IS TRYING TO LOOK LIKE BIANCA OR A CUBAN HOOKER. OR WISHES HE WERE BIANCA. OR A CUBAN… EVEN IF THIS WAS A NORMA KAMALI IT SUCKS! BUT I BET HE WAS WEARING WHITE CAPEZIOS. WHICH KNOCKS IT UP A NOTCH.

Jumping a head here. The suit yes, the tie no. I don’t know, should a tie ever be worn by Mick Jagger on stage? should a tie be worn by any rock star onstage in this day and age? I think perhaps not but i could be proven wrong. The pants are wonderfully cut. I don’t think this is Paul Smith. If it is, you can bet there  were no discounts involved with this transaction.

I FUCKING LOVE THIS! This is Mick, as an older gentleman, redoing the Rock and Roll Circus costume but aging it gracefully by substituting all black for a renaissance fair palette. The boot shoes (Prada?) work in this context. He’s got to run, for chrissakes. Did he buy the jeans from Jimi at Trash and Vaudeville? In my fantasy of a perfect world, he did.

Fucking sweet. Mick could have picked out the suit on his own but the hat? L’Wren’s influence, definitely. R.I.P. L’Wren. What a talented beauty.
