It’s Johnny Cash’s birthday today. A cover of Nine Inch Nails (NIN), “Hurt,” was the last hit song he recorded before he passed away. It was a surprise to everyone when it was released in 2002. The religious country singer wasn’t expected to sing a blasphemous song. Well, he didn’t actually. Cash changed the lyric, “Crown of shit,” to “Crown of thorns.” He also referenced Christ and his devout Christianity in the song. The accompanying video, showing scenes from Johnny’s past, won a Grammy for ‘Best video of the year.’ Later in 2011, NME named the video, ‘The best video of all time.’ Watch it below.
