This week’s video is dedicated to William Carlos Williams, the great poet/doctor from Paterson, N.J. who inspired the Beats (and whose masterpiece was a book-length poem called Paterson). Williams, whose birthday is Sept. 17 (bn. 1883), was partly the inspiration for Jim Jarmusch’s poetic film Paterson, starring Adam Driver as a bus-driving poet named Paterson. This clip closes the film, as Driver’s revery beside the Passaic River is interrupted by a Japanese tourist carrying a book of William Carlos Williams’ poems.
