Is good old Rock ‘n’ Roll dead? When was the last time you heard a new rock band on the radio? When it comes to rock music, the airwaves are saturated with nothing but “classic rock”. You rarely hear anything brand new. Here’s a quick list of some great bands who are currently making music that you should check out…
With the days of Heavy Metal Parking Lot and stadium tours over, where has rock ‘n’ roll gone?
My opinion is that rock went back underground, to its roots. Like most genres, the best music is usually created by independent artists who don’t get radio play. With today’s technology, it has become a lot easier and cheaper for bands to record and distribute music. Almost every computer comes pre-loaded with audio recording software. There are numerous streaming platforms, such as Bandcamp, SoundCloud, Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube. With all that music to sift through, you’re bound to find something you like. Here are 10 underground rock bands who are currently making music that have caught my attention the past few years, for you to check out…
Blues Pills are from Örebro, Sweden. Blues Pills play raw rock ‘n’ roll/ blues with a pinch of soul. The song featured below is from their newly-released album, Holy Moly!
Buzzard Canyon are from Connecticut, and are best described as Camaro rock. As their promo states, “Picture yourself with a jean jacket, mullet, driving an early ‘80s Camaro, bottle of whiskey by your side, shotgun on the floor and you’re pumping your fist as you roar down a desert road with the radio at full volume…” I think that about sums it up.
Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats
Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats are from Cambridge, England. The band’s music is heavily influenced by the late 1960s. Their music could be described as a soundtrack to the post-flower power comedown of the summer of ’69 and the Manson murders blending into the horrors of Altamont, with a knack for creating an atmosphere that captures the darker atmosphere of the era.
Heavy Rock band from Copenhagen, Denmark. They sound like a heavier version of Heart, if they were part of the California Palm Desert music scene.
Spiders are from Gothenburg, Sweden. Spiders are a band that blend the best parts of 70s and 80s rock and soul, and are one of those bands who are even better live than on recordings.
Lecherous Gaze are best described as a great party band who play psychedelic, shredtastic, rock-punk heavy jams.
Gentlemans Pistols are from Leeds, England. They sound like the best band the 70’s never had, a heavier Led Zeppelin. You can’t go wrong when the band is made up of members of Carcass, Voorhees, and Send More Paramedics…
Ruby The Hatchet
Ruby The Hatchet are from Philadelphia. They’re a mix of hard rock with a 70’s psychedelic vibe, with occult overtones. Good to listen to when you’re kicking it with your coven in the woods.
Orchid are from San Francisco, California. If you like Black Sabbath, you will like these guys.
Graveyard are also from Gothenburg, Sweden. They have toured with everyone from Iron Maiden, Motörhead, and Soundgarden to Mastodon and Clutch. They play a very unique mix of rock, blues and folk. Everything these guys do sounds great.
