Jimmy was my first teacher, he had drummed for Blondie, gotten the musical approval of Lou Reed, and even had to stop Stiv Bators from hitting on his girlfriend.
1982's 'The Fabulous Stains,' is one of my favorite cult movies. Starring a sixteen year old Diane Lane (Third Degree Burns) as the lead singer of an all girl punk band named The Stains, whose motto is, "We don't put out!"
We recently chatted with Gillian McCain, author of two poetry books, Tilt and Religion, co-author (with Legs McNeil) of Please Kill Me: The Uncensored Oral History of Punk, and co-editor of Dear Nobody: The True Diary of Mary Rose (also with Legs McNeil). She is also a collector and exhibitor of found photography. She spoke about her time at NYU and her eclectic artistic pursuits.
The Life Is Dance compilation is a continuance of The Sound Of Wonder compilation. The soundtracks of these Lollywood movies were made by Pakistani musicians who really loved American music. So with the groovy 60's fuzz guitar sounds that echo Hollywood films combined with the drum beats of their native land, these unique tracks were born.
I dare you not to smile while watching these funky cats boogie down the party line. The 70's kids are my favorite as far as moves go, but the hair and outfits in the 80's clips are also priceless.
Listening to One Prayer One Sin erupts symbiotic visual reels of 70's city's streets and Travis Bickle wearing a bloody smile. Watching singer Johnny Scuotto flail his arms around hysterically while taunting the audience with a devilish grin pronounced by bare brows as he shouts and jerks around- can only properly be described as a "psychopathic Ian Curtis" dance. OPOS is a dynamic combination of the Birthday Party, the Pop Group, Brian Eno, and a distinct influence from Iggy Pop's albums of 1977, The Idiot and Lust For Life.
